An exploded pipe bomb was found in a garbage can in Banff National Park on Tuesday, according to RCMP.
In a Wednesday news release, RCMP said Parks Canada employees found the improvised explosive device near Carrot Creek.
The bomb had caused damaged to the bin.
“This event is considered at this time to be an act of vandalism rather than a deliberate intent to harm any person or to promote a cause,” Staff Sgt. Michael Buxton-Carr said. “Detonation of this amateur device could have caused significant injury to those who planted the device or to the employees who empty the garbage bin.”
RCMP said they checked “numerous” garbage bins within the park but didn’t find any other bombs.
“Anyone who locates a similar device should not attempt to handle it and is asked to vacate the area and notify the RCMP immediately.”
Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call Banff RCMP at 403-763-6600 or contact Crime Stoppers.
