Calgary fire hazmat crews were on the scene of a chemical spill at a hotel in northwest Calgary on Thursday morning.
According to the Calgary Fire Department (CFD), about 70 litres of chlorine spilled in the pool mechanical room of a two-storey hotel in the 2300-block of Banff Trail N.W.
Crews were called to the hotel at about 9:30 a.m. and upon arrival, firefighters quickly donned their hazardous materials equipment, CFD said.
“The product was found to be an industrial bleach that gave off a strong chlorine odour and on its own, posed little risk to anybody outside of the immediate area,” a CFD release said Thursday. “The hazardous materials team was able to safely put most of the product back into its original undamaged container.”
Investigators did readings of the surrounding area and determined there was no threat to public safety. The hotel and fire crews were prepared to evacuate the 120 guests and staff, but that wasn’t needed, CFD spokesperson Carol Henke said.
There were no injuries reported as a result of the spill.
