McGill University has been granted $200 million to finance bursaries for students studying in medicine, law and masters programs. The donation was made by McGill alums John and Marcy McCall MacBain. The McCall MacBain Foundation has donated $200 million to McGill University, considered the single-largest gift in Canadian history.

The money will go to the creation of the McCall MacBain Scholarships, giving students from Canada and abroad the opportunity to pursue a Master’s or professional degree, such as law and medicine.

“As graduates of Canada’s publicly-funded university system, Marcy and I know first-hand how universities like McGill can reduce social barriers and foster talent at the highest of levels,” said donor John McCall MacBain.

The scholarships will provide full funding to cover tuition and fees, as well as a living stipend.

“Scholars will benefit from mentorship and immersive learning experiences including retreats, workshops and internships,” the university stated.

Students who are developing expertise in their respective fields and have a track record of collaborating with others to understand and address important problems and challenges will be eligible.

“We are incredibly grateful to John and Marcy McCall MacBain for their visionary support of McGill’s students,” said Suzanne FortierMcGill’s principal and vice-chancellor.

“The McCall MacBain Scholarships embody our vision for McGill … a place where students become future-ready and prepared to contribute to shaping our rapidly changing world.”

The goal is to expand to include international students by the third year; within five years, the hope is that at least 75 students will be supported by the McCall MacBain scholarships.

“As we develop these scholarships and support our scholars, we are looking forward to welcoming promising leaders with entrepreneurial spirit who foster opportunities not only for themselves, but for those living in the world around them,” Marcy McCall MacBain said.

The university explains scholars will be selected on a combination of civic engagement, intellectual curiosity, entrepreneurial spirit, academic excellence and exceptional character.

Applications will open in fall 2020 to students from across Canada who plan to begin their studies in fall 2021.
