Saskatchewan Roughriders sign Canadian linebacker Sam Hurl to 1-year extension

National linebacker Sam Hurl has been signed to a one-year contract extension by the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

This will be Hurl’s second straight season with the Riders after the six-foot-one, 230-pound linebacker signed with the team as a free agent in 2018.

Originally selected by the Riders in the second round — 12th overall — in the 2012 CFL Draft, Hurl spent three seasons with the team before joining the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 2015.

Hurl started all 18 games at middle linebacker last season and registered 41 defensive tackles, six special-teams tackles and two tackles for loss.

He also picked up three defensive tackles in the Western Semi-Final against the Bombers in the 2018 playoffs.

Hurl has collected 207 defensive tackles, 53 special-teams tackles and eight quarterback sacks in 108 career regular-season games over seven seasons and has also played in five career playoff games.

The Calgary native, 28, was part of the Riders 2013 Grey Cup championship team in 2013.
