CALGARY – Police are investigating after the public slaughter of a chicken in the cafeteria at the Alberta College of Art and Design, on Thursday.
Officers responded to the college around 12:15 p.m. after a student called to report someone was killing a chicken with a knife.
According to police, the act was a student’s interpretation of a school assignment to hold a public protest.
The student involved has been identified by police, but not arrested or charged.
Police will be consulting with the Crown to determine whether or not charges are warranted.
Meanwhile, The Calgary Humane Society is voicing concern over the incident.
“We are against animals being used for entertainment, whether it’s under the guise of art,” says spokesperson Philip Fulton.
“At this time, because Calgary Police Services has stepped in, we’re letting them handle the situation,” adds Fulton.
ACAD has released a statement on their Facebook page in response to the incident, which states:
“We are currently working with Faculty, students, staff to better understand today’s incident. The mental and physical health of our students is always the most important to us.
If any students who are experiencing grief and or shock would like to speak to someone, you are welcome to contact our Counsellor, Jason Bauche at jason.bauche@acad.ca or 403-284-7666. Appointments can be made but are not necessary.”
