Alberta Health Services (AHS) is expanding its successful QuitCore program to five new locations across the province this fall.
The program will be offered for the first time in Barrhead, Cold Lake, Drumheller, Medicine Hat and Red Deer. QuitCore will also continue to be offered in Airdrie, Calgary, Camrose, Edmonton, Fort McMurray, Lethbridge, Stettler and Wetaskiwin.
QuitCore is a free group support program that gives Albertans the tools and skills they need to quit smoking while connecting them with others who are also trying to quit.

Fall registration starts August 31, 2010, and sessions begin the week of September 27th. Albertans interested in registering for the program in their community may call toll free to 1-866-710-QUIT (7848).
“We know that it is difficult for individuals to quit smoking on their own and they need support to be successful,” says Susan Canning, AHS Tobacco Reduction Manager. “We are pleased to expand this program to new communities to help more Albertans.”

QuitCore and its predecessor program at the Tom Baker Cancer Center in Calgary have helped over 7,000 Albertans quit smoking.
Led by trained cessation professionals, the QuitCore program consists of six or eight in-depth sessions over a 10- to 14-week period, depending on the location. The program teaches smokers how to develop a quit plan that will work for them and provides strategies for dealing with recovery symptoms, managing stress and preventing relapse.
Alberta Health Services is the provincial health authority responsible for planning and delivering health supports and services for more than 3.7 million adults and children living in Alberta. Its mission is to provide a patient-focused, quality health system that is accessible and sustainable for all Albertans.
