Peterborough man accused of assaulting dog with baseball bat

A Peterborough man was charged after police say a dog was assaulted in the backyard of a Peterborough home last month.

Peterborough police were called on Jan. 24 to check on the well-being of a dog at a Hilliard Street residence.

Police say the accused went into the backyard, punched the dog, and then struck it several times with a metal baseball bat before being confronted by a neighbour.

The dog did not require immediate medical attention, police said.

Police noted the accused knows the owner of the animal.

Officers found the accused still at the residence. Police contacted the Ontario SPCA.

Nathan Ronald Jacobs, 36, of Hilliard Street, was arrested and charged with killing, injuring or endangering an animal.

He was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 13.
