An iconic tourist destination in Cape Breton that celebrates a beloved singer and songwriter has announced its closure.
Rita’s Tea Room was opened more than 30 years ago by famous island singer Rita MacNeil in the community of Big Pond.
The closure was announced in a Facebook post Wednesday, where the business stated the decision was “extremely tough, especially knowing how wonderful all the folks visiting have been.”

MacNeil died in 2013, but her family has kept the business going. For years it was a popular destination for tourists and fans.
The family says a smaller version of the tea room will open in downtown Sydney on Charlotte Street, with a gift shop and a display about Rita MacNeil’s singing career.
