Kitchener Rangers knock off Soo Greyhounds in overtime

The Kitchener Rangers finished the weekend off with a bang by defeating the Greyhounds in Sault Ste. Marie Sunday in the extra frame.

Sault Ste. Marie got on the board first as Rory Kerins beat Lucas Pfeil just 3:04 into the opening period.

Three minutes later, Joseph Garreffa would even the score as he recorded his 14th of the season.

Mike Petizian would follow less than two minutes later and the Rangers had their first lead of the see-saw battle.

The home side took over in the second period as Ryan O’Rourke and Mac Hollowell scored to give the advantage back to the Greyhounds.

Then it was time for the stars to step up for Kitchener.

Greg Meireles would score with less than three minutes to play to pull Kitchener even and force extra time where Jonathan Yantsis would give the Rangers the win.

FRIDAY: Flint Firebirds 7, Kitchener Rangers 2

Emanuel Vella turned away 51 shots as the Flint Firebirds got past the Rangers in Kitchener 7-2 to snap a three-game slide.

Jack Wismer and Evan Vierling had a pair of goals each for the Firebirds, who got singles from Ethan Keppen, Ty Dellandrea and Hunter Holmes.

Donovan Sebrango and Reid Valade scored for Kitchener. Lucas Pfeil combined with Luke Richardson for 22 saves in defeat.
