EPC votes to add driver shields to Winnipeg Transit buses in one year

The city’s Executive Policy Committee has voted to install bus driver safety shields in Winnipeg Transit buses in the next year.

The money for the shields will come from the 2019 capital budget.

Aleem Chaudhary, head of the drivers’ union ATU 1505, said the operators are pleased to see progress on enhanced safety measures.

“We have proven over and over throughout the years that this is a necessity that we need to address, and it is being addressed right now.”

The motion was put forward by Coun. Matt Allard, and now goes to council next week for a full vote.

Mayor Brian Bowman said he expects the shields to be installed within a year.

“It’s going to difficult work for the public service to get it done in one year, but that’s what we want. We want it done as soon as possible.”
