Fire crews were called to the area for an electrical issue in the utility area of an apartment building.

Once on scene, crews investigated and found a problem in the main electrical panel, the Winnipeg Fire and Paramedic Service said in a release late Saturday.

The panel was turned off and while waiting for Manitoba Hydro smoke and flames broke out inside a unit.

A fire was declared and crews were able to contain the fire to the two end suites in the building.

The suites have heavy fire damage and are unsafe to enter, additional suites suffered extensive water damage, the release said.
