Woman dies following north Edmonton home invasion: police

Police said homicide detectives are investigating the death of a woman connected to a north Edmonton home invasion on Friday night.

Officers responded to a home near 119 Avenue and 61 Street at around 8:50 p.m. after reports of shots fired, police said. When officers arrived, they found a man and woman with serious injuries.

Edmonton police said the woman was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries, where she died later on Friday evening.

Police have identified her as 59-year-old Barbara Nelson.

The 56-year-old man — who was also inside the residence at the time of the home invasion — was treated by paramedics and taken to hospital with serious injuries, police said.

Edmonton police said suspects fled the scene before officers arrived and there is no description of the suspects or vehicle at this time.

Homicide detectives continue to investigate but believe it was a targeted attack.

An autopsy on Nelson has been scheduled for Monday morning.

Police said they have released Nelson’s identity because it helps with the investigation.
