5 suspects wanted in connection with brazen Markham mall jewelry store robbery

York Regional Police say investigators are looking for five suspects after a daring robbery at a jewelry store inside a Markham mall Sunday evening.

Police said officers were called to the CF Markville mall at McCowan Road and Highway 7 at around 6:25 p.m.

The incident happened at the Lukfook Jewellery store. Police said six suspects, all wearing construction vests and carrying guns and hammers, arrived in two vehicles.

They went inside and smashed various glass display cases, escaping with an undisclosed amount of jewelry.

Broken glass was visible in front of the store and outside of the mall.

Police said one of the responding officers spotted a male suspect, chased him down, and arrested him.

Twenty-seven-year-old Toronto resident Tristan Currie was charged with robbery, disguise with intent, and assault with intent to resist arrest. Currie appeared in a Newmarket court on Monday.

Meanwhile, police said officers were called to the Markham GO station just before the robbery with a report of a suspicious package.

Investigators said it’s believed the call was an attempt to distract officers away from the mall.
