Police investigate fatal crash on Calgary’s Stoney Trail Thursday

Calgary police are investigating a fatal collision on Stoney Trail near 114 Avenue S.E. in Calgary Thursday night – Dec 28, 2018

A single-vehicle crash in southeast Calgary left one person dead on Thursday night, according to a spokesperson for Calgary EMS.

Calgary police said they were called at around 9:20 p.m. to a fatal single vehicle collision in the northbound lanes of Stoney Trail near 114 Avenue S.E.

Police believe the vehicle — a black Chevrolet Cobalt — started to exit onto 114 Avenue and lost control. The car spun back onto Stoney Trail crossing all three lanes of traffic and colliding with a street light in the meridian, police said.

The 35-year-old male driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said he was the only person in the car.

Police said speed and alcohol are being investigated as factors in the collision.

At 9:43 p.m., police tweeted that Stoney Trail had been shut down because of a “serious collision” but did not provide further details other than asking drivers to avoid the area.

Police closed down both the north and southbound lanes of the highway to investigate.

The roadway re-opened a few hours later.
