Emergency crews were called to a home on 45 Avenue near 54 Street around 1:30 a.m., according to RCMP, where they found a house engulfed in flames.

An 88-year-old woman and a 62-year-old man were pronounced dead on scene. Police said the pair lived in the house.

Marcial Castro, who lives across the street, called 911 after he saw smoke and a broken front window.

“When I saw [there was a lot of] smoke … I immediately took my phone and called 911 because it’s strange,” Castro said. “It’s not normal.”

Fire investigators continue to look into the cause of the fire, but it isn’t considered suspicious.

“We do have some ideas as to the cause,” said Leigh Sawicki, the Wetaskiwin fire chief. “There’s no [definite] answer to the cause yet because it’s still under investigation.”

No one else was in the residence at the time.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
