SASKATOON – As the city continues to tackle ruts with the snow melting, it’s also time to start fixing potholes.
Driving down Saskatoon streets is a bit of an obstacle course and the city says potholes are worse than normal.
During the winter season potholes are patched with cold mix asphalt. In order to be properly filled they require hot mix which is only available in the spring and today the city received a shipment.
Nine crews are starting to repair potholes on priority streets including 8th Street, downtown, Circle Drive, Idylwyld Drive, Attridge Drive, College Drive, 51st Street, 22nd and Warman Road.
“We’re just on the start of it… We haven’t even seen the full force of potholes so what we’re expecting. We’re preparing for the worst and hoping for the best. We’re expecting this will be one of the major pothole seasons that we have had in recent memory,” said Pat Hyde public works manager.
So far this month, 95 claims have been filed against the city by residents complaining of vehicle damage dur to winter driving condition.
According to the city solicitor’s office, 140 pothole, sink hole and rut claims were filed in 2012. Only $8,628 was paid out to applicants.
The city has not yet released its full plan for spring and summer pothole repairs.
