TV stars top list of powerful gays and lesbians

TORONTO – Four of the five most powerful gay men and lesbians in the U.S. work on television, according to OUT magazine’s 7th annual Power 50 list.

The rankings, unveiled Wednesday, include talk show host Ellen DeGeneres in second place followed by producer Ryan Murphy (Glee, American Horror Story), MSNBC host Rachel Maddow and CNN’s Anderson Cooper.

The magazine says the list recognizes “the gay men and women whose power and prestige is instrumental in influencing the way Americans think about, and engage with, the world.”

Apple CEO Tim Cook holds the No. 1 spot for the second year in a row.

Fox News host Shepard Smith (No. 8), actor Neil Patrick Harris (No. 13), host Andy Cohen (No. 14), TMZ boss Harvey Levin (No. 25), CNBC host Suze Orman (No. 28), actress Jane Lynch (No. 40) and reality show host RuPaul (No. 50) are the other TV personalities on the list.

Music industry heavyweights among the Power 50 include singer Frank Ocean (No. 10) and record label boss Clive Davis (No. 42).

Other entertainment figures on the list include fashion designers Tom Ford (No. 31) and Marc Jacobs (No. 19), film and theatre producer Scott Rudin (No. 17), director and producer Bryan Singer (No. 34),  and screenwriter Dustin Lance Black (No. 43).

OUT’s Power 50 list also includes gay and lesbian politicians, business leaders and activists – as well as digital media figures like celebrity blogger Perez Hilton, news aggregator Matt Drudge and Gawker’s Nick Denton.
