GMO protests set for Okanagan MP offices

Protests are set to take place at MP offices across the Okanagan Tuesday, joining a nationwide movement against genetically modified or engineered organisms (GMO).

The call to action comes from the National Farmers Union (NFU).

In Kelowna, NFU representatives say they have gathered 800 signatures against the approval of GMO alfalfa. The petition will be presented during the noon to 1pm rally to Kelowna-Lake Country MP Ron Cannan.

Back on March 30th, the same group held a protest at the Dayton Street overpass, calling on the federal government to demand foods are labeled to include GMO ingredients.

“The Conservative Party is rushing to push aside independent safety studies (ie Seralini GM corn) and allow more and more GMO food without study or public approval and consent,” says the group in a press release on the planned protest.

“The end of natural hay, which means the end of the organic dairy and meat industry can then be directly attributed to the MP who has always voted with his party,” the release goes on to assert.

In a letter to the local newspaper, Cannan stated all petitions he receives “that meet the prescribed format of the House of Commons, will be tabled in Parliament.”

Protesters will also gather at the Vernon office of MP Colin Mayes, one of 38 MP offices targeted by Tuesday’s rallies against GMO’s.
