Canada, India sign arrangement for nuclear cooperation

SASKATOON – Canada and India have signed an arrangement for nuclear cooperation between the two countries.

The finalization of the appropriate arrangement between the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission and India’s Department of Atomic Energy was announced today at Saskatoon-based uranium producer Cameco.

Last November, Prime Minister Stephen Harper and India’s Prime Minister Manmohan Singh concluded talks for the arrangement.

It is the next step towards the full implementation of a nuclear cooperation agreement which will allow Canadian companies to export nuclear material, equipment and technology to India for peaceful purposes.

The commission will oversee the implementation of the agreement.

India is currently the fourth largest consumer of energy in the world and demands are expected to triple in the next 25 years.

In Canada, uranium mining accounts for over one-billion dollars per year in exports, supporting approximately 5,000 jobs.

Cameco is one of the largest uranium producers in the world, accounting for around 14 per cent of the world’s production.
