Montreal shooting results in 23rd homicide of 2018

Montreal police are investigating after a 51-year-old was shot late Monday evening in the borough of Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve.

Police spokesperson Raphael Bergeron said a call was made to 911 after the man was found with injuries to his upper body on Pierre-Tétreault Street.

The man was conscious when he was rushed to hospital but later died of his injuries. This is the 23rd homicide in Montreal this year.

Police say the suspect fled the scene before their arrival and left a firearm behind. The major crimes unit has taken charge of the investigation, though they still have no information about the suspect.

The victim was known to police from prior drug-related incidents.
