Pooling on top of the ice or melting at the edges of water bodies are a couple signs of instability.
Fire officials are also warning that the South Saskatchewan River current is faster right now, due to an increase in releases from the Diefenbaker Dam in anticipation of spring runoff.
The national Lifesaving Society echoes those warnings and adds a caution; If anyone sees a person falls through thin ice, don’t panic, don’t approach the hole, call 911 and try to help from a distance until emergency services arrive.
