Edmonton – The Edmonton Oilers announced on their twitter account Monday morning that the organization has signed Ladislav Smid to a contract extension.
The defenceman and the organization have agreed to a 4-year deal with $3.5 million per season.
The 27-year-old is in his seventh season with the Oilers. Smid has three points and a minus two rating this season.

The four-year deal works out to a US$14 million contract extension.
Smid recorded a career-high five goals and 15 points in 78 games in 2011-12.
The six-foot-three, 207-pound native of the Czech Republic native is in his seventh season with the Oilers. He was set to become an unrestricted free agent after this season.
A physical presence on the blue-line, Smid leads the Oilers in blocked shots (91) and hits (103). He led the club with 184 blocked shots and 186 hits last season.
He has represented the Czech Republic several times internationally, most recently at the 2007 world hockey championship. He also participated in the 2004, 2005, and 2006 world junior hockey championships and the 2003 and 2004 world under-18 hockey championships.
Smid was Anaheim’s first-round selection, ninth overall, in the 2004 draft. He was part of the 2007 trade that sent defenceman Chris Pronger from Edmonton to the Ducks.
