REGINA – The abnormally high snowfall that Regina has received this year is causing concerns that parks and sports fields might not be ready for the summer.

When Regina Red Sox president Gary Brotzel tries to get into the baseball diamond at Mount Pleasant Park, he’s met with an unwelcome sight. The gate is stuck in several feet of snow.

“I’ve never seen this much snow on the diamond in my eight years of running this team,” he said.

The playing field and stands are also covered in snow.

“There’s at least three feet of snow pack across the whole diamond. Up against the wall I think it’s right over the eight foot wall in the outfield,” Brotzel said.

Even getting to the field itself requires a long hike through knee-high snow.

It’s not just Mount Pleasant Park that’s covered in snow, it’s golf courses as well. It’s got people worried whether the golfing season will have to start later than normal.

Besides sports, there are also portions of neighbourhood parks that are buried in snow, making it hard for residents to use them.

Over at Mosaic Stadium, there is still more snow. But the Riders say they’re not worried about a delayed season, as the field was designed with drainage in mind.

Back at the baseball diamond, Gary Brotzel is hopeful that the snow will melt away well before their first game here.

“I’m sure the snow will be gone,” he said. “We just need a couple warm days and we’ll be good.”
