Last weekend for the HST

This will be the last weekend for the much hated HST in our province.

Come Monday the unpopular tax will be eliminated.

The HST was brought in, in 2010, but its introduction caused so much controversy.

In a referendum in 2011, voters decided to go back to the GST and PST.

While many are celebrating, it seems others are confused about going back to the old system.

So where will you save money?

Many things won’t change at all  – basic groceries will continue to be tax- free. And restaurant meals will be a little cheaper, not alcohol though – that will go up to 15 per cent.

But you’ll also save money on many event tickets, bicycles, veterinary services,  and real estate commissions – to name a few things.

“The way the tax is structured, certainly we’ll see, probably more spending on restaurant meals, fitness, gym, golf memberships, won’t be subject to the PST, so there are things, hairdressers, dry cleaning, that sort of thing,” said Helmut Pastrick, Central One Credit Union chief economist.

“Personal services, professional services, it might even give a slight lift to the housing market in a sense that realtor’s commissions will not be subject to the PST, so a bit of a saving there.”
