A New Brunswick man has been sentenced to 14 days in jail after pleading guilty to hunting while impaired and scuffling with conservation officers with a loaded firearm.

Gilles Poirier, 62, of Saint-Quentin, N.B., was also fined $4,800. An additional charge under the Criminal Code for obstructing a peace officer resulted in a fine of $390.

The incident, back in the fall of 2015, was described by the province’s Department of Justice and Public Safety as a “high-risk situation.”

According to the province, the officers were conducting compliance checks in the Saint-Quentin area. They say Poirier was driving an ATV and tried to run away from the officers.

“A scuffle ensued involving a loaded firearm, creating a high-risk situation, but no one was injured during the incident,” a media release from the justice department reads.

The province reminds residents that hunting while impaired can lead to dangerous situations, including accidental discharge, blurred vision and poor judgment.

The public is asked to report any hunting or fishing violations to conservation officers or to Crime Stoppers.
