People living in Lanigan, Sask. are being advised to stock up on water as none will be available on Aug. 14.

The town’s water supply is being shut off between 7:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. CT Tuesday to complete upgrades to the water treatment plant.

The disruption will last longer for people living on Hoover Street North and Vetshome Drive. Water will also be shut off to those homes from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. from Wednesday to Friday while main valves are replaced on Hoover Street.

Officials said people should fill containers and bathtubs to use for flushing toilets by hand-filling the toilet reservoir.

A precautionary drinking water advisory (PDWA) will be in place once service is restored, and will remain in place until testing confirms the water is safe for consumption.

During the PDWA, people are advised to:

  • boil all water used for drinking purposes for a least one minute
  • boil water for other activities where it could be ingested, including: brushing teeth, washing fruits and vegetables, for food and drinks that will not be heated, and for ice cubes
  • not to use water for washing dishes unless it has been boiled for a least a minute
  • not to drink from public fountains
  • ensure younger people and infants are sponge-bathed
  • use alternative sources of water if boiling water is not an option
  • people with severe cuts or rashes should consult a doctor before using water

It is not necessary to boil water for other household uses. Adults, teens, and older children can shower, bathe, or wash using tap water but should avoid swallowing.

A limited supply of non-potable water will be supplied to the hospital and lodge as those are considered essential services.

Town officials expect the PDWA to be lifted within a week of the last service disruption.
