Green rebate program a big savings for Calgary employees

CALGARY- A unique rebate program is helping hundreds of Calgary employees save both money and energy.

Cenovus is one of four Calgary companies offering a green spending account, rewarding employees who cut their water and power costs. Participants can qualify for up to $600 per year in rebates, by installing a programmable thermostat ($50 rebate), switching to green power ($100 rebate) or buying Energy Star appliances.

“The rebate program gives you a hundred dollar rebate per year which goes towards your green power,” says Cenovus employee Russ Koehler. “I actually pay just over ten dollars a month for the green power, so that takes care of all the bills.”

The program was created by Climate Change Central (C3), and in five years it’s handed out $1.3 million in rebates to workers at four Calgary companies. Employees have spent $8 million on energy efficient products.

“The way that the green spending account works is to introduce the opportunities and the savings in the personal lives of the employees, and hopefully that actually translates into decisions that change in the workplace,” explains Angus Taylor from C3.

“When you have to make those really big ticket kinds of purchases, instead of purchasing a low efficiency one at a lower price tag, you can use the benefit that the corporation’s offering to get into the most efficient and the most cost savings.

“Over the course of having that appliance in the home, you save a lot of money.”

The program is available to any company.
