A seven-year-old boy was airlifted to hospital in critical, life-threatening condition from the scene of a highway crash near the southern Alberta town of Beiseker on Wednesday afternoon, according to EMS.

Several other people were also taken to hospital, they said.

EMS said paramedics were called to the scene on Highway 9, near the intersection of Highway 806 and Range Road 255, at around 2:30 p.m.

The RCMP said the crash involved a gravel truck and a car. A witness told Global News a third vehicle was involved but that was not been confirmed by RCMP.

“The preliminary investigation has revealed that an eastbound gravel truck entered the oncoming lane and collided with a westbound car,” police said in a news release Wednesday night.

Police said, in addition to the boy who was airlifted, four other people were taken to hospital in Calgary: a 55-year-old man driving the gravel truck, a 43-year-old woman driving the car, a 46-year-old man who was in the car and an 11-year-old boy who was also a passenger.
