A standoff with police in the Calgary community of Bankview ended in an arrest Thursday evening.
Police said they were initially called to an apartment building on 26 Avenue and 16 Street S.W. at around 4 p.m. for a report of a break-in.
A man refused to leave the home or speak with officers, police said, and there were concerns the person may have had a weapon.
Some people living near the building were forced out of their homes while negotiators tried to make contact.
Around 10 p.m. the tactical team made an arrest after the man gave himself up.
Police said the suspect wasn’t armed but there was a gun in the home.
“Police had information there was a lawfully owned weapon inside the house, it wasn’t something the offender brought with him,” said Acting Staff Sgt. Mathew Gow. “However just due to the possibility that that weapon was in play, we had to give the response that we did for the purposes of public and officer safety,”
Police won’t confirm whether drugs were involved, but said the suspect was incoherent for some time.
Information on charges, if any, have not been released by police.
