According to police, a 37-year-old man is in stable condition in hospital after suffering serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Police said reports indicated a hammer and knife were used during the assault.

Two men are now in custody and charges are pending after an extensive search by patrol and canine units.

Police tell Global News they believe it was a random attack.

“We don’t have any information that would indicate the victim knew the two suspects at this point,” police spokesperson Alyson Edwards said. “Our investigators believe that they were not known to each other.”

Police were called just after 7:15 a.m. CT for reports a man was “seriously assaulted” by multiple people.

Jim Marshall lives near the alley on Avenue H where the assault happened Monday morning. He witnessed the attack when he glanced out his window.

“I saw three guys across the alley, one of them sitting down and the two others standing around him. Suddenly, the two started beating on him,” Marshall said.

“I quickly ran out and hit the garage door opener and I think that scared them off. By the time the garage door was open, they were both gone and the fella they had been beating on was crawling across the street.”

Marshall said police arrived on scene minutes later.

Saskatoon police can’t say if the assault is gang related, but are investigating all avenues.

They’re asking anyone with information to come forward or to contact Crime Stoppers.
