Ten of those councillors have officially signed up and Ward 4 councillor Christine Billings confirmed in an email on Thursday that her appointment at city hall is scheduled for Friday morning.

Ward 6 councillor Karl Wettstein confirmed in an email late Thursday night that he would not be seeking re-election.

“I have really appreciated the opportunity to serve as [a] Guelph city councillor and was very much tempted to run again, but it is time to support some new faces and I look forward to doing just that.”

Wettstein served from 2000 to 2003. He was elected again in 2006 and has been on council since.

Besides Wettstein, not only will the race include all of the incumbents, but also other well-known names, including Guelph’s NDP candidate in the recent provincial election, Aggie Mlynarz, who is Guthrie’s only opponent as of Thursday night.

Mlynarz finished third behind Green Party Leader Mike Schreiner in the June vote.

A pair of former city councillors are also looking to reclaim their seats.

Lise Burcher served as councillor for Ward 5 from 2003 to 2014 and is now vying for the seat in Ward 6. Peter Hamtak is after the Ward 4 seat after he represented Ward 6 from 2003 to 2006.
