A 32-year-old Winnipeg man is behind bars after taking police, and a woman, on a late night chase through the city.

Police said the man was arrested early Saturday morning after leading officers from the North End to the north Perimeter Highway at a high rate of speed.

Officers first noticed the vehicle near McGregor Street and Jarvis Avenue at 12:50 a.m. and began pursuit after the driver ran a stop sign.

Air1 was called in to help in the chase and the cruiser backed off.  The vehicle was seen running a number of stop signs and red lights.

When the car turned onto the Perimeter Highway, police used a StopStick twice but the vehicle continued.  It veered into the westbound lanes and sped eastward against traffic, travelling up to 170 km per hour.

The car finally ran into a ditch when it lost a tire. The driver jumped out and ran, but officers caught up with him.

A woman in the car told police she had been forced into the car from her home in the Weston area.

He now faces a slew of charges, including driving while impaired, dangerous driving, resisting arrest, possession of a weapon and forcible confinement.
