Douglas College is the latest B.C. school to ban smoking from all campuses

If you want to have a cigarette at Douglas College, starting September 1st, you’ll have to go off school grounds because it’s getting rid of its designated smoking areas.

It has become the latest institution to ban smoking and vaping at all of its campuses.

Director of Safety, Security, and Risk Management Nancy Constable said they have been getting complaints for years.

“We would get complaints from employees about smoke coming in through windows and air vents and second hand smoke basically being detectable in work areas.”

“I know that many post secondaries are considering this and looking to see the impacts of those of us who are moving in this direction.”

Langara and Kwantlen have also banned smoking from their campuses.

Constable said a campus wide survey found that 75 per cent of respondents said they were bothered by second-hand smoke at school.
