Two dogs die following trip to Carleton Park
WATCH: Two dogs are dead following a trip to a park in Fredericton. City officials and police canvassed the area yesterday and came up empty handed. The deaths have left some park-goers on edge and afraid to go near the water. Morganne Campbell has more in this report – Jul 24, 2018

Carleton Park is a busy spot. The picturesque scenery on the water attracts many in Fredericton, especially those and their four-legged canine friends.

That’s why news of two dogs dying at the park came as such a shock to pet owners.

“I was surprised because I was taking Buddy here for a stroll. I just wanted to visit the area. I want to be safe,” explained one park user.

According to Jeff Wilhelm’s Facebook page, his two dogs, Sookie and Peekaboo, died within an hour of each other on Sunday after getting into something on the shoreline.

It has not yet been determined exactly what the dogs came in contact with.

On Monday, the Fredericton Police Force did a search of the area and didn’t find anything that could be considered suspicious in nature.

A representative with the City of Fredericton calls this a “sad and unfortunate” situation, adding that “no similar incidents have been reported to either police or the city.”

News of the tragedy spread quickly in a park that’s often full of regulars and those trying to get out on the water.

“I was surprised because a lot of people come down here with their dogs and a lot of them swim in the water and things like that. You know, kids, they’re down on the shoreline and they also wade in,” explained one park user.

Postmortems are being conducted on both dogs to determine the cause of death and add insight into what caused two little dogs to die after a routine trip to the park.
