Saskatoon police said a 67-year-old man dressed in ethnic clothing had to scramble to avoid a truck being driven towards him on a sidewalk earlier this month.

The assault happened just after 4 p.m. CT on July 13 in the 400-block of Cumberland Avenue South.

The man, who police said would have been identifiable as a person of ethnic origin, was walking home from a religious service when he saw a southbound truck cross into the northbound lane and then onto the sidewalk where he was walking.

Police said the man fell into a bush to narrowly avoid being struck by the vehicle. He then ran into his nearby home, where two bricks were thrown through windows of the house.

One person from the truck is alleged to have shouted words to the effect of “what are you doing here?”

Two men, believed to be Caucasian, were thought to be in the truck, which is white in colour.

No arrests have been made as police continue to investigate.

Police officials said the acceptance and respect of people that bring new languages, cultures and traditions to the city not only enriches the community but contributes to its overall safety.

Anyone with information about any crime appearing to be based on ethnic origin, religion, or diversity is asked to contact Saskatoon police at 306-975-8300 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
