The Palliser School Division voted last night to accept the tentative agreement between the province and the Alberta Teachers Association. The deal comes after years of on and off negotiation. Both parties agreed to freeze salaries in the 4 year agreement. The vote was held the Board’s regular meeting Tuesday night.
Board members say they are supporting the agreement for a few reasons, including the securing labour peace for four years and that it holds the line on teachers’ salaries for the first three years. The Minister of Education has said a 2% increase in 2015/2016 and a one time lump sum payment of 1% of annual salary that same year will be funded by the government. Palliser Board of Trustees also say for the first time ever there will be restriction on the number of instructional hours a teacher can work.

According the superintendent of the Palliser school board it’s an important move in light of the provincial budget. The Palliser board says it’s expected to operate it’s 2013- 2014 budget with about 2.2 million dollar less revenue. Officials say the financial shortfall could result in larger class room sizes and fewer teachers.
