The City of Winnipeg is already making sandbags available to homeowners worried about their properties being swamped by overland flooding, once all the snow melts.
With so much snow still on the ground, and the ground still frozen, a significant amount of runoff is almost guaranteed once temperatures finally rise above zero later this week and next week.
Sandbags can be picked up at the following locations between 10 am and 6 pm daily:

- 1220 Pacific Avenue (West End)
- 849 Ravelston Avenue West (Transcona)
- 1539 Waverley Street (Fort Garry)
“For emergencies, sandbags to protect against overland flooding are available outside the hours of 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. by contacting 311. Identification showing Winnipeg residency is required in order to pick up sandbags,” the city said in a news release Wednesday.
Sandbags are only available for pick-up by Winnipeggers who need to protect their properties against overland flooding; not property owners who may require sandbagging to protect against potential high river levels. The city says it will reveal its plans for dealing with river flooding at a news conference on Thursday morning.
Crews are also working to clear frozen drains and culverts, so the runoff has somewhere to go.
“Property owners can contact 311 for assistance if ponding water caused by frozen catch basins and culverts is a threat to their property. “
