A 28-year-old man who caused a fatal crash in Surrey was back in court today to learn his fate.
Gurjit Dhillon struck and killed 83-year-old Pritam Benning as he waited at a bus stop nearly four years ago.
Dhillon was convicted of dangerous driving causing death in November and today he was in court to hear his sentence.
The Crown was asking for 2.5-3 years in jail and a 10-year driving prohibition.
The prosecution says Dhillon was “showing off” when he was speeding in his black Corvette that day.
The defence is asking for suspended sentence and unspecified probation and driving prohibition.
Dhillon’s lawyers pointed out that their client did stay at the scene and co-operated with police.
They also say Dhillon is suffering from depression and tattooed the victim’s name on himself with the phrase “the day everything changed.”
Three victim statements were also read in court today from Benning’s son, daughter and grandson.
The hearing will continue for the rest of the day, but the judge is not expected to come back with a verdict today.
