Three people managed to escape an early morning house fire in the City of Kawartha Lakes on Thursday.
Fire crews were called around 4:30 a.m. and say they found open flames coming from a house on Mitchell Drive in the village of Omemee, just north of Emily Provincial Park.
Peterborough This Week reports that a couple and their adult son and a dog managed to get out safely after waking up and discovering flames sweeping through the home. They ran to a neighbour who called 911.
Kawartha Lakes Fire Rescue Service deputy fire chief Dave Kish says it took crews more than four hours to get the fire under control.
“It’s a total loss,” he said.
Officials from the Victoria County Disaster Trust were on scene to assist the family.
Damage is pegged at $400,000.
Kish said the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
