Ottawa Fire have determined the fire that occurred at 304 Cumberland St. on Monday evening in the Byward Market was a smoking-related accident.
According to Ottawa fire, the investigation involved a number of interviews and a thorough investigation of the fire ground.
The Ottawa Fire Services investigators determined that the cause was accidental and originated on a wooden patio deck on a flat rooftop due to improperly discarded smoking materials.
According to the investigation, the estimated damage cost is $150,000 and the building contained residential and commercial units, some of which sustained some fire and operational damage.
“Firefighters completed extensive salvage operations in the units to minimize damage,” wrote Ottawa fire staff in a release. “Crews also removed certain items as a precaution and there are approximately four persons displaced. We would like to take this opportunity to thank our partners at the Salvation Army and Red Cross for assisting those impacted by this fire.”
Ottawa Fire Services says smoking materials should always be placed in sturdy, noncombustible containers that are wind resistant, and never in recycling containers, dumpsters, planter pots or mulch, especially in the drier summer months.
