Two workers who were seriously injured in a workplace incident with a train on Friday in Edmonton are expected to recover, Occupational Health and Safety said on Monday.

OHS said the workers, who remained in hospital on Monday, were injured while moving rail cars at an industrial work site in the area of 45 Street and 68 Avenue on Friday morning.

Police, emergency medical workers and OHS staff could be seen at the property of a business called Maple Leaf Metals.

A stop work order has since been issued at site, OHS said on Monday.

The men were found on the ground in “medical duress,” according to police, and taken to hospital with what were described as life-threatening injuries at the time.

OHS continues to investigate what led to the men’s injuries. It’s too soon to say whether charges will be laid, OHS said.

“Charges are not considered in an OHS investigation until the investigation comes to a close,” Alberta Labour spokesperson Lauren Welsh said in a statement Monday.

“OHS has a statute of limitations of two years less a day to complete their investigation and, if necessary, refer the case to Alberta Justice for charges to be laid.”
