Ken Stanworth, Vancouver police officer, charged with assault after 2016 incident

A charge of assault has been approved against a Vancouver police officer after an incident that unfolded in downtown Vancouver on March 1, 2016.

Const. Ken Stanworth has been charged with one count of assault causing bodily harm, the BC Prosecution Service (BCPS) announced in a news release Friday.

The Independent Investigation Office (IIO) was called to the 2016 incident and later carried out an investigation.

The IIO’s chief civilian director forwards a report to the BCPS when it’s determined that an officer might have committed an offence.

The IIO announced in January that it had filed two reports to the BCPS for consideration of charges.

One of them concerned a March 1, 2016 incident that happened in the 700-block of Burrard Street.

The incident saw a man suffer “serious injuries” as he was arrested by Vancouver police officers.

Stanworth is still on active duty, the Vancouver police said.
