Alberta man charged after allegedly handing out homophobic pamphlets at Toronto Pride in 2016

Toronto police have charged an Alberta man following a hate crime investigation involving the city’s annual pride parade two years ago.

Police said they received multiple complaints in 2016 about a man handing out anti-gay material at the parade.

On Friday, William Whatcott, 51, of Leduc, Alta., was arrested in Calgary and was returned to Toronto.

Police said he was charged with one count of wilful promotion of hatred against an identifiable group, namely the gay community.

He was scheduled to appear in court Monday.
