Good morning folks. Today I showed and talked about Epson’s
new portable USB WorkForce DS-30 document and business card scanner, $179.
Available in stores or Epson’s own retail site, www.epsonstore.com

It is
small, smooth, fast and works on Windows and Macs, requiring only one USB port,
not two like other devices. A one-button push on the scanner can save the scan
on your computer or quickly whisk it online.

Just as
importantly, the software package included let’s you convert scans into editable
Word docs, business card scans and searchable PDF files. You can scan
sequential pages or one.

Nicely out
together by a company who lives and breathes scanners, printers and projectors.
I also showed how folks can “scan” documents by using their smartphone cameras
and save to PDF format.

There are
any available on the online app stores for iPhones, Androids and BlackBerry and
many are free. But free in this case is disappointing, because to get the real
deal, similar to the results of the Epson portable scanner, you need to spend
about $5 on these free PDF scanner programs for the full meal deal, like searchable
PDF documents.

WalkmanZ Sony Walkman Z marches into fourth decade

Sunday Morning News Tech Talk

Story continues below advertisement

Yesterday on the GlobalTV Sunday Morning News show I showed
and talked about Sony’s new Walkman Z series mobile media player. Here are the
most important points to remember on whether you should spend several hundred
bucks on one or not:

-Apple’s iPod touch 16GB and Walkman Z 16 GB both cost $300
and have fixed memory and both do email. The iPod has two cameras and a sharper
screen and runs on the well-greased iTunes and 500,000 apps. The Walkman Z comes
with superior in-ear buds, runs on Android with just over 200,000 apps and a superior
tablet-like processor so it runs games better and has the right DNA for the
Sony Entertainment Network

-The Walkman Z unquestionably has the best sound quality than
any other portable player/smartphone I have tried.

-Why bother buying another portable media player when your
smartphone will do? If you are away from a charger for long periods of time,
and additional dedicated player will save precious battery on your cell or
smartphone.

Sony also recently introduced its Music Unlimited service, a
separate service for listening to as many of the some 15 million songs as often
as you like for $9.99/month. It runs (not at the same time) on any Windows PC
or Laptop, Android devices and Sony’s family of Experia/Vita/PS/tablet/Bravia
devices. You albums, favourite songs, playlists are saved online with a cool
sense feature that suggests appropriate music for the mood you are in. Won’t be
near a network or WiFi connection? No problem, you have the option of
downloading songs on your device’s memory to play from anywhere. Nice
