Two of the women are suffering life-threatening injuries. All three were struck while walking on a sidewalk at Portland State University’s urban campus.

The driver and the vehicle, described by witnesses as a blue SUV, fled the scene. A witness later saw the vehicle at an LRT station and called 911, police explained.

Police have not yet determined a motive and know little about the man, Simpson said. Authorities are getting a search warrant so they can seize the car as evidence, he said, and have yet to rule out factors such as intoxication, mental health problems or a medical incident.

Portland Police tweeted the bureau “does not believe there is a danger to the community connected with this incident.”
