History

The Central Saanich area has long been inhabited by the Tsartlip and Tsawout First Nations.

European settlers first arrived in the area in 1855 and carried out construction that connected the East and West Saanich roads at the base of Mt. Newton.

A quarry and cement plant would be opened at the site of the future Butchart Gardens in 1904, before it closed in 1916.

The gardens became a popular destination after Jennie Butchart, one of the quarry’s proponents, turned it into the “Sunken Garden.”
