Alberta’s police watchdog said Friday that despite calls to identify the man who was found dead after a police standoff that left one officer injured, it won’t be releasing the man’s name.
The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) said the decision to withhold the name was made “out of respect for the man’s family and loved ones” and was “in keeping with the established national policy of investigative agencies across Canada.”

ASIRT said the body of a 25-year-old man from British Columbia was found in a burned-out garage following the shootout in late March.
Officers had been investigating an attempted carjacking and break-in that followed a convenience store robbery when they located the suspect between two homes, Calgary police said.
The man opened fire when officers tried to arrest him and ran into a neighbourhood garage that was later engulfed in flames, they said.
On Thursday, Calgary Police Association president Les Kaminski once again reiterated his demand that ASIRT release the names of “the criminals responsible for the attempted murders” of Calgary Police Service (CPS) members in recent weeks.
That same day, ASIRT said it would not release the name of a 26-year-old Calgary man involved in an incident in Bridgeland where an undercover officer shot and killed a man who reportedly tried to rob him at knifepoint.
