Crown says Kristin Johnston’s life ‘ended in tragedy’ in opening remarks at Nicholas Butcher trial

The Crown laid out their case against the man accused of killing Halifax yoga instructor, Kristin Johnston, on Wednesday.

Tanya Carter told the eight-woman, six-man jury hearing Nicholas Butcher’s second-degree murder trial that the Crown plans to show that Johnston died as the result of 10 wounds to her neck from sharp force.

Carter said that they will show on March 25, 2016 Johnston went out with friends and discussed breaking up with Butcher. She said that Butcher found out where she was and went to visit her twice that night at her friend’s home, while she was out.

The Crown says the jury will hear that at 7:23 a.m. on March 26, 2016, there was a 911 call from Johnston’s home from Butcher saying he needed help, that he tried to kill himself and that his girlfriend was dead.

Carter told the jury that Butcher couldn’t be without Johnston.

Butcher has pleaded not guilty to killing Johnston and is currently on trial at Nova Scotia Supreme Court. Twenty days have been set aside to hear the case.
