Arctic air surges in for Easter with -30 to -40 wind chills moving in.
Saskatoon Forecast
Thursday
-30 is what it felt like with wind chill to start the day as the mercury plunged to -18, its lowest level since the beginning of March.
A bit of light snow started the day with mostly cloudy skies sticking around right through the morning as the snow eased and a breezy northeasterly winds inhibited any major heating.
Clouds clear out and bring back the sunshine during the afternoon as arctic air surges in, keeping our daytime high in the minus teens with wind chills in the -20s all day.
Thursday Night
Mostly clear skies during the evening allow temperatures to dive right down into the -20s with wind chills into the -30 to -40 range before some clouds roll back in during the early morning hours.
Good Friday
The mid -30s is what it’ll feel like to start Good Friday under cloudy skies thanks to a system passing by to the south and bringing snow to much of southern Saskatchewan.
Sunshine should start to return during the afternoon with a breezy northwesterly wind kicking in and keeping our daytime high around -12 degrees with wind chills in the -20s all day.
Some extreme southern parts of the province could see up to 10 centimetres of snow, so check ahead with the Highway Hotline if travelling through the area this long weekend.
Saturday
Blue skies and sunshine will be back for Saturday as the centre of the arctic high drops by and keeps conditions cold, with temperatures in the -20s to start and wind chills back in the -30 to -40 range.
Skin can freeze in minutes at these kind of cold wind chill values and a record low temperature could be at stake in Saskatoon if the mercury falls below our previous record from 1970 of -22.8 degrees.
Good news is a windy westerly wind will kick in during the day with gusts upwards of 50 km/h, helping to push in milder air that should help warm us up into minus single digits for an afternoon high.
Easter Sunday
Beautiful sunny skies will stick around into Easter Sunday with another cool start with wind chills pushing toward the -30s.
It’ll be a much more pleasant day to get outside though with sunshine continuing into the afternoon as we climb up to a daytime high in mid-minus single digits.
Easter Monday/Work Week Outlook
Mid-minus single digit daytime highs stick around for Easter Monday and into the middle of the week under a mix of sun and cloud before more clouds roll in for the rest of the first week of April.
