When applying for jobs, many of us tend to gravitate towards the big-name companies we’ve come to know and trust. By doing that, however, not only are you battling intense competition from other job seekers, but you may be neglecting a sector of the working world and missing out on ample career opportunities.

“There are many diverse opportunities for job seekers in this sector and for this reason job seekers should definitely consider working for a small business in Canada,” Jodi Kasten, managing director at Indeed Canada, says. “Working for a small business offers you a unique opportunity to seek different responsibilities that can help develop your skills. Another big draw can be the work culture, Kasten adds, as well as the convenience factor. She says you’re likely having to avoid a long commute by choosing to work for a local small business as well.

But jobs in these sectors struggle to find talent and fill positions, Kasten says.

“This can be for a variety of reasons: either employers aren’t finding the talent they need or that they’re hiring multiple people into the roles,” she says. “This speaks to the demand out there and the opportunity job seekers have to find employment in the small business sector.”

Recruiting, she adds, is a challenge for businesses of all sizes, but there are unique challenges that small businesses face.

First, they may not have a human resources person or department. Many times, she says, it’s the owners themselves doing the hiring.

Second, good employees are hard to find and the hardest employees to find are often most expensive to lose, Kasten says.
